Driver length – are you playing with a club that's too long?

The driver is the king of clubs – meant to hit the longest and make the loudest statement. But what happens if it’s too long for your game? As more and more amateur and tour players start shortening their drivers, the question becomes increasingly relevant: Do you really need 46 inches to hit long drives? Or are you sacrificing accuracy, control – and possibly even distance – in the pursuit of raw power?

Most drivers sold today measure around 45.5 to 46 inches. This trend has been driven by a desire for more distance, both from manufacturers and players. But real-world performance tells a different story. The majority of tour professionals – including top-ranked players – use drivers between 44.5 and 45.25 inches. Why? Because consistency and control often outweigh a few extra yards of carry. “A shorter driver gives me the confidence to swing freely without losing control,” is something we hear often during our fittings.

When we at CustomClubs Golf tested three different driver lengths, the results were clear.

Shorter drivers improved sweet spot contact.

Shot dispersion decreased, especially for players with moderate swing speed.

Tempo and timing improved thanks to smoother swings.

And perhaps most surprising – distance loss was minimal or even reversed, thanks to better contact and reduced spin.

Most recreational golfers don’t choose their driver length – they buy what’s available off the rack. And since many stock drivers are longer than what tour players use, a lot of golfers are unknowingly using clubs that are harder to control than necessary. Want to hit more fairways, improve contact, and enjoy your tee shots more? Then testing a shorter driver might be a game changer.

The key is custom fitting. At CustomClubs, we help you test the ideal length, shaft, and weighting for your swing. The goal is simple: to build a driver that works in real life – not just on paper. We offer fitting sessions for driver length, shaft and loft, custom builds in any length, and expert guidance from experienced fitters.

Summary: A shorter driver isn’t just for the pros. Most tour players use shorter-than-standard lengths. A shorter driver provides better control, more consistent contact, and often more playable distance. Custom fitting is the best way to find your optimal length. A shorter driver can give you more confidence off the tee – and more fairways hit.
