Getting out of the bunker shouldn’t feel like a lottery. In our latest episode, we explain how club selection, loft and bounce
affect the result – and how to adapt your choice to the sand, the lie and your technique!
In the episode “How do we choose a club when we’re trying to get out of the bunker?” Oscar & André take you step by step through the decisions that matter most: how high the bunker lip is,
how soft or packed the sand is, and which wedge (loft/bounce/grind) suits your swing and technique.
1) Obstacle & carry
High lip / small landing area: 58–60° (lob wedge).
Standard shot (10–20 m): 54–56° (sand wedge).
Long bunker shot (25–40 m) with plenty of green: 50–52° (gap wedge).
2) Sand consistency (bounce & sole)
Soft/fluffy sand: higher bounce (12–14°) and a slightly wider sole – glides through without digging.
Firm/wet/packed sand: lower bounce (8–10°) and a narrower sole – grips appropriately and won’t bounce.
3) Angle of attack & strike pattern
Steep attack / often digs: choose more bounce so the sole skims the sand more easily.
Shallower attack / “sweeper”: slightly less bounce gives better ground interaction.
4) Technique that helps everyone
Open the face before you grip.
Weight 60/40 on the lead foot, ball slightly forward.
Aim slightly left, enter the sand 2–3 cm behind the ball and accelerate through.
In the video we show how small adjustments to loft/bounce quickly change launch, peak height and roll – and why the right sole grind can be the difference between bunker trouble and a simple up-and-down.
